You can download the free trial from the links below:
RPG Maker MZ
RPG Maker MV
The free trial doesn’t come with a key, simply press the “continue” button to run the application.
RPG Maker MV and MZ both have built in tutorials in the “Help” menu found in the top bar of the engine window.
You can access documentation to guide you through the game making process by selecting the “Help” menu from the top bar and then selecting “Contents”. This documentation explains many things about the engine, from how to use events, to how to use your own custom assets.
There are wonderful tips and tutorials that can be found in the active blog section of rpgmakerweb.com:
RPG Maker blog
A basics Youtube tutorial series was created for MZ that outlines much of what you need to get started making your own games. While it’s a series made for MZ much of what can be learned applies to MV as well.

You can make an entire game without learning a single line of code using RPG Maker. Many users have generously provided free coded solutions that increase the capability and versatility of the engine called plugins. Most of these can be used with no knowledge of coding. There’s a large selection to be found in the JavaScript board subforum of our official forums:JavaScript boards
Yes. RPG Maker MZ for OSX is supported through Steam. You can either purchase it on Steam, or activate your copy from the Degica Shop using the following process:
Mac/ OS Installation guide:
1. Download Steam and install this to your PC: http://store.steampowered.com/about/
2. At the very top of the Steam application, click on Games > Activate a product on Steam.
3. Follow the prompts to enter your product key (*****-*****-*****) and activate your product.
RPG Maker MZ will run on most computers in use today and is compatible with Microsoft Windows 8.1/10 (64bit) and OSX. For more information compare your computer to the following requirements:
Processor: Intel Core i3-4340 or better
Memory: 8 GB RAM
Graphics: Compatible OpenGL / VRAM 1GB or better
Storage: 4 GB available space
Additional Notes: 1280x768 or better Display
When a new version of RPG Maker MZ is released, you can update in one of two ways depending on how you purchased:
Degica Shop: If you use the standalone version, you can download the latest version here.
Steam: If you use the Steam version, RPG Maker MZ will be automatically updated to the latest version.
When you update RPG Maker MZ, any project that was created with an older version of RPG Maker MZ will still have the core files from that version. To update your core files, follow the process outlined here:
1. Create a backup of your project or only its data and js folders. If you are running additional code from plugins, the new corescripts may not be compatible. It is always good to keep a backup just in case!
2. Update your project by going to the Main Tool Bar -> Game -> Update Corescript option. Select the Corescripts of the current version
You can also check if any images were updated that you wish to replace in the specific updates patch notes.
Yes, your purchase of RPG Maker MZ includes the license to make commercial games with the engine.
No, once you have purchased RPG Maker MZ, you do not owe us any additional fees or royalties when you release a commercial game made with the engine.
No. The Materials that come with RPG Maker MZ are licensed ONLY for use with RPG Maker engines.
Yes! As long as you own the version of RPG Maker you are using, and the version of RPG Maker you are using materials from, you are free to use any default materials that came with those purchases within the RPG Maker series.
In older versions of RPG Maker, the default graphics, music, and sfx were packaged into a “Run Time Package” which could be installed separately from your games. This method is no longer used by RPG Maker, but in the community the default materials for an RPG Maker engine are often still referred to as the RTP.
To add additional graphics and audio resources to your RPG Maker MZ project, you can access the Resource Manager from the Tools Menu in the editor. From there, you can select the category of resource you are importing, and finally, select the materials you wish to add to your project.
For an example using sprites and battlers, you can follow along in this video tutorial.
Plugins are additional bits of code created to alter the base functionality of your RPG Maker MZ game. They can be used to change almost anything about how the engine functions.
You can learn the basics of using RPG Maker MZ plugins by following our two part tutorial:
Part 1
Part 2
Additionally, you can find tons of plugins ready to use by checking out our RPG Maker MZ Plugin List here.
There are a few reasons this error could be happening:
1. Your antivirus or firewall protection program is blocking RPG Maker from running.
You can test if this is the issue by temporarily disabling your anti-virus and launching RPG Maker, or by adding RPG Maker to your antivirus to the white/exception list. Other background programs can occasionally interfere with RPG Maker. To verify if this is the issue, please try disabling all background programs and then launch RPG Maker.
2. RPG Maker is installed in a location that's restricted by Windows.
For example, C://Program Files is a common install location that's restricted by Windows in order to protect your operating system. In this case, you may wish to run RPG Maker .exe file as administrator (you can do this by right-clicking on the .exe and selecting "Run as Administrator"). You can make this permanent by right-clicking the program and selecting "Properties", then select the "Compatibility" tab, select the "Run as Administrator" check-box.
3. Your video card and display drivers are not up to date, or they are not running a stable version.
You can update your video card drivers by visiting your video card manufacturer's website. If your video card drivers are already up to date, try reverting to an older version to see if that helps. Your display drivers are generally updated as part of your Windows update. You can check if Windows has updated recently (please make sure to restart your device if an update is downloaded, but not applied) and verify if there are any display driver changes. Avoid using Windows built in driver update feature as this won’t always guarantee that you have the latest driver for your graphics card. Always reset (not the shutdown option) your PC after updating your driver.
4. The application may be opening on a “Phantom screen”.
This is a monitor that doesn’t exist, therefore you can’t access or move the window. If RPG Maker is running and you can see it’s active icon on the taskbar, this is likely your issue, please try the following steps to resolve the issue:Right-click the program on the taskbar, and then click Move. Move the mouse pointer to the middle of the screen. Use the ARROW keys on the keyboard to move the program window to a viewable area on the screen. Press enter.Click on the icon in the taskbar. Hold Win+Shift, then press the left or right directional keys until the window appears on your desktop.
5. Lastly, it could just be a non-specific computer issue that requires you to reinstall RPG Maker.
In this case, you will want to back-up any projects you have by placing the project files in another folder or on a flash drive. We recommend having at least 2 back-ups such as a flash-drive or online cloud service, just to ensure your files are safe.
If you still have questions, or you have a technical or sales issue that needs to be addressed, you can contact our support team here.
